The Art of Navigating Setbacks

Featuring Michael O’Brien, Todd Cherches, and Laura Gassner Otting

Every one of us will experience setbacks.

Some arrive without warning. Others emerge slowly as we realize the path we’re following is no longer taking us where we want to go.

They can shake our confidence, challenge our assumptions, and leave us wondering what comes next.

But what if a setback isn’t simply something standing in our way?

What if it can become the moment that changes the way we see the road ahead?

In Episode 4 of this special Virtual Campfire series inspired by Campfire Lessons for Leaders, Tony Martignetti explores The Art of Navigating Setbacks through three powerful conversations with Michael O’Brien, Todd Cherches, and Laura Gassner Otting.

When Everything Changes

For Michael O’Brien, the setback was immediate and life-altering.

A devastating cycling accident nearly took his life and forced him to confront not only the physical challenge of recovery, but the way he had been living before the accident.

Michael had been successful by many traditional measures, yet internally he describes himself as being on a hamster wheel, constantly chasing happiness.

The accident stopped that pursuit in an instant.

What followed was more than recovery. Michael began reconsidering the story he was telling himself about his life, eventually recognizing that while he couldn’t change what had happened, he could choose how he responded to it.

His experience offers a profound distinction:

We may not control the moment that changes our lives. But we still have a say in the story we write afterward.

The Career Path That Wasn’t a Path

Todd Cherches describes his career not as a carefully planned trajectory, but as a roller coaster filled with twists, turns, exhilarating highs and terrifying drops.

He experienced layoffs, was fired, took jobs he expected to love and discovered he hated them. Then hesitated to take opportunities that ultimately changed his life.

Again and again, Todd found himself pushed beyond what was comfortable or familiar.

And those experiences gradually revealed something important.

The setbacks weren’t simply interrupting his career.

They were expanding it.

An unexpected move to Los Angeles, jobs outside his comfort zone, a layoff, temporary work at Disney, and even a reluctant trip to China eventually helped Todd discover abilities and ideas that became central to the work he does today.

Looking backward, the path makes sense.

Looking forward, he never could have planned it.

When the Pain Cave Becomes a Tunnel

Laura Gassner Otting spent years following a path toward a future she thought she wanted, until she arrived and realized it wasn’t where she belonged.

That realization opened the door to an entirely different way of thinking about success.

Rather than simply asking whether we’re succeeding, Laura challenges us to consider whether what we’re doing actually aligns with who we are.

And when life becomes difficult, she offers a memorable metaphor from endurance sports
The pain cave.

When we reach that place where we’re exhausted, uncertain, and questioning whether we can continue, it can feel as though there’s nowhere left to go.

But Laura makes an important distinction.

The pain cave isn’t necessarily a cave.

It may be a tunnel.

And there is another side.

The experience of making it through doesn’t simply prove that we survived. It can reveal capabilities we didn’t know we possessed.

A Different Way to See Setbacks

Michael, Todd, and Laura experienced very different kinds of disruption.

One had his life changed in an instant.

Another discovered that a career rarely follows the neat path we imagine.

And one learned that sometimes the plan itself is what needs to change.

Together, their stories reveal something important about navigating setbacks:

Moving forward doesn’t always mean getting back to where we were.

Sometimes the experience changes our perspective.

Or, it exposes strengths we didn’t know we had.

It can even force us to question an old definition of success.

And sometimes it points us toward a possibility we never would have considered otherwise.

Perhaps the art of navigating setbacks isn’t found in avoiding them.

It’s found in deciding what we do when they arrive.
