What if the most powerful way to strengthen a business relationship wasn’t another meeting, marketing campaign, or carefully crafted sales pitch?
What if it was a gift?
Not the predictable holiday basket, branded merchandise, or generic thank-you gesture. But something thoughtful, meaningful, and strategically connected to the relationship itself.
In this episode of The Virtual Campfire, Tony Martignetti welcomes Kade Kimber, client experience strategist, speaker, and founder of Kimber & Oak, for a fascinating conversation about authenticity, personal transformation, entrepreneurship, and the surprising power of intentional gifting.
Drawing on nearly two decades of corporate marketing experience, Kade has developed an approach he calls Gift Intelligence, helping organizations move beyond transactional gestures to create meaningful connections that strengthen loyalty, retention, and long-term relationships.
But the philosophy behind his work began long before his corporate career.
It began in a tiny Utah community, where the joy of giving, the challenges of growing up, and the determination to follow his own path shaped the person he would become.
Where the Joy of Giving Began
Growing up in Grouse Creek, Utah, a community of fewer than 100 people, Kade experienced a world where neighbors gathered, celebrations brought people together, and Christmas held a special kind of magic.
Those early experiences taught him that giving could create joy, connection, and lasting memories.
But another childhood Christmas brought a more complicated lesson.
Following his parents’ divorce, both parents attempted to compensate for the disruption by showering their children with gifts, despite significant financial hardship.
Looking back, Kade recognizes the complexity of that experience. Yet amid the uncertainty, the celebration created a moment of happiness that stayed with him.
He began to understand something that would eventually become central to his professional life.
A gift is never just about the object. It’s about the emotion and meaning attached to it.
Discovering Who You’re Meant to Be
As the only son in a ranching family, Kade was expected to follow generations of tradition and eventually take over the family ranch.
By nine years old, he was driving tractors, working long days in the Utah heat, and learning responsibilities that seemed far beyond his age.
But those hours alone in the fields gave him something unexpected: time to think.
He knew ranching wasn’t the future he wanted.
Although he couldn’t yet imagine what his life might become, he was beginning to recognize what it wouldn’t be.
That realization became an important part of his journey.
Throughout his childhood, Kade continued discovering abilities and interests that didn’t necessarily fit the expectations surrounding him.
He excelled academically, found confidence through new challenges, and learned that stepping outside his comfort zone could reveal strengths he hadn’t recognized.
Those experiences helped establish a principle he still carries today:
Embrace your strengths without boasting about them, but never diminish yourself to make others comfortable.
The Seven-Year-Old Entrepreneur
One of Kade’s earliest entrepreneurial experiences offers a wonderfully unexpected glimpse into his future.
At seven years old, he decided to publish a neighborhood newsletter.
His first subscriber, a neighbor named Mrs. Barker, paid more than the requested subscription price.
Delighted by her generosity, Kade wanted to give something in return.
He searched his home for an appropriate gift and proudly presented her with a pocketbook.
Mrs. Barker loved it.
There was only one problem.
The pocketbook belonged to Kade’s great-grandmother and was a treasured family keepsake.
Although the experience taught him an important lesson about asking permission, it also revealed something he wouldn’t fully appreciate until years later.
Even as a child, he instinctively understood that a thoughtful gesture could strengthen a relationship.
What began as an innocent attempt to delight a customer would eventually become a defining element of his business philosophy.
The Courage to Choose a Different Path
Kade’s professional journey was anything but predictable.
He initially pursued a path toward law, completed the LSAT, and received a law school scholarship.
But an unexpected marketing opportunity opened a different door.
He decided to postpone law school for a year.
That year became an entirely new career.
Around the same period, coming out allowed Kade to release years of negative self-talk and discover new mental and emotional space.
He began exploring entrepreneurship, launching a custom dog clothing business inspired by his beloved dog.
That venture eventually grew into an international pet apparel business reaching hundreds of retailers across eight countries.
Meanwhile, his corporate marketing career continued to develop, introducing him to leadership, brand strategy, and client experience.
Looking back, Kade sees these experiences not as disconnected detours but as opportunities that helped him discover what mattered most.
He learned that an opportunity doesn’t automatically become the right opportunity simply because it’s available.
Sometimes the greatest act of self-trust is recognizing when a door isn’t yours to walk through.
Rethinking the Way Businesses Give
During his corporate marketing career, Kade began questioning the traditional approach to business gifting.
Organizations were spending significant amounts of money on promotional products, holiday baskets, and client appreciation gifts.
But what were those investments actually accomplishing?
Often, success was measured by the number of thank-you messages received.
For someone accustomed to evaluating marketing performance, that wasn’t enough.
Kade believed gifting could accomplish something far more meaningful.
It could influence how people felt about a business, strengthen relationships, encourage referrals, and improve client retention.
When his ideas didn’t fit the conventional approach of his employer, he began developing them independently.
That decision eventually led to the creation of Kimber & Oak and a new way of thinking about gifting.
Gift Intelligence: Giving With Purpose
Kade’s Gift Intelligence framework challenges organizations to stop treating gifting as an isolated act of appreciation.
Instead, he encourages businesses to begin with a clear objective.
What relationship are you trying to strengthen?
Who are the people most important to that objective?
What meaningful outcome would demonstrate success?
Rather than simply sending gifts to the clients generating the most revenue, Kade suggests considering which relationships are most relevant to the specific goal.
If the objective is referrals, for example, the right recipients may not necessarily be the largest accounts.
This approach changes the conversation.
Gifting becomes less about distributing something attractive and more about creating an experience that supports a meaningful business relationship.
It also introduces something often missing from traditional gifting programs: measurable outcomes.
Authenticity at Scale
One of the most compelling ideas in Kade’s work is that meaningful gifting doesn’t have to depend on knowing every personal detail about the recipient.
In fact, attempting to personalize a gift without accurate information can create exactly the wrong impression.
Instead, Kade encourages organizations to focus on the authentic reasons people choose to do business with them.
Their values, story, and experiences.
The meaning behind the relationship.
This is what he calls authenticity at scale.
Whether an organization is sending one gift, one hundred, or one hundred thousand, the objective remains the same: create something meaningful that reflects the relationship without sacrificing authenticity.
It’s a powerful distinction.
Personalization isn’t necessarily about knowing someone’s favorite colour or their children’s names.
Sometimes it’s about demonstrating that you understand why the relationship matters.
Turning Mistakes Into Meaningful Moments
Tony and Kade also explore an often-overlooked opportunity to strengthen business relationships: what happens when something goes wrong.
Every organization makes mistakes.
But the way a company responds can leave a more lasting impression than the mistake itself.
A thoughtful gesture can demonstrate accountability, care, and a genuine commitment to making things right.
For Kade, these moments are especially powerful because emotion is already present.
The opportunity is to transform disappointment into a more positive experience.
It’s not simply about offering compensation.
It’s about showing people that the relationship matters beyond the transaction.
Thinking Inside the Box
In a world where businesses are constantly encouraged to think outside the box, Kade offers a clever alternative.
Think inside the box.
For him, a meaningful business gift brings together a company’s authentic story and the story of the person receiving it.
The gift becomes a tangible expression of the relationship.
Something that can create an emotional connection long after the package has been opened.
And that is where the true opportunity lies.
Not in the gift itself, but in what it communicates, what it makes someone feel, and what happens next.
Authenticity Creates Lasting Impact
Kade’s journey reveals that the most meaningful professional ideas often grow from deeply personal experiences.
His childhood love of giving, determination to follow his own path, willingness to experiment, and years of marketing experience all contributed to the work he does today.
But the larger lesson extends far beyond gifting.
Whether we’re building a business, leading a team, or strengthening a relationship, authenticity requires intention.
It asks us to understand what matters, recognize what makes us different, and act in ways that reflect those values.
Because meaningful relationships aren’t built through gestures alone.
They’re built through the care, consistency, and understanding behind them.
