What happens when the life you’ve worked so hard to build no longer feels like the life you’re meant to live?
Sometimes, the most important decisions we make aren’t about achieving more. They’re about recognizing when it’s time to change direction, release something that once mattered, or trust an instinct that others may not understand.
In this episode of The Virtual Campfire, Tony Martignetti welcomes executive coach, author, and entrepreneur Achim Nowak for an inspiring conversation about personal transformation, intuition, reinvention, and the courage to create a life that continues to evolve.
From founding a theatre company in Washington, D.C., to leaving an established career for a simpler life on the Caribbean island of Tobago, to building and eventually selling a successful coaching business, Achim’s journey has been anything but conventional.
And that’s precisely the point.
His story reminds us that meaningful growth isn’t always about climbing higher. Sometimes it’s about recognizing when we’ve outgrown the ladder.
Learning to See the World Differently
Achim’s curiosity began early.
Growing up in a German family that lived in different countries, he was introduced to history, culture, and exploration through his father’s work as an architect.
Rather than simply reading about ancient civilizations, Achim visited archaeological sites and experienced their history firsthand.
Those experiences shaped his curiosity about people, places, and the different ways we make sense of the world.
But their deeper meaning didn’t become apparent until much later.
Achim describes the importance of looking back on our experiences and recognizing how they have influenced who we’ve become.
Sometimes the significance of a moment only reveals itself after we’ve lived through many more.
The Power of Asking, Why Not?
At 24, Achim was working as an actor in Washington, D.C., when he and several colleagues decided to start a theatre company.
They didn’t spend years analyzing whether it was a good idea.
They simply began.
Their early work attracted attention, and the company went on to produce meaningful theatrical experiences.
Looking back, Achim recognizes something important about that decision.
They didn’t talk themselves out of the opportunity.
They talked themselves into it.
As we become more established in our careers, the perceived consequences of taking risks often become greater. We have reputations, responsibilities, and expectations to protect.
But Achim believes we don’t have to lose the adventurous mindset that allowed us to explore possibilities in the first place.
Sometimes the most productive question is simply:
Why not?
The Courage to Follow an Unconventional Path
In his mid-thirties, Achim had built a successful career in theatre.
Then health concerns prompted him to reconsider how he wanted to live.
During a period of reflection, he developed a clear vision of living in a white house on a Caribbean island.
Six months later, he was living in Tobago.
There, he committed himself to learning how to windsurf, eventually becoming highly skilled at something he had once only imagined doing.
For Achim, the accomplishment wasn’t simply about mastering a sport.
It was proof that he could envision a different life, commit to it, and follow through.
One of the most meaningful moments came when he told his mother about his decision to leave his career behind.
Rather than questioning his judgment, she offered a simple expression of trust: she believed he knew what was best for himself.
That moment stayed with him.
Sometimes the greatest encouragement we can offer someone isn’t advice.
It’s the confidence that they can find their own way.
Knowing When It’s Time to Let Go
Years later, Achim faced another important decision.
He had built a successful international leadership training and coaching company. The business had strong clients, a talented team, and a reputation for meaningful work.
But something had changed.
He no longer wanted to spend his time developing and customizing leadership training programs.
He wanted to focus entirely on coaching.
So he decided to sell the business.
People around him questioned the decision. Why walk away from something successful? Why not hire someone to manage it?
But Achim understood something they couldn’t necessarily see.
Just because something is successful doesn’t mean it’s still right for you.
He wasn’t rejecting his accomplishments.
He was acknowledging that the next chapter of his life required something different.
His experience raises an important question for leaders and entrepreneurs:
Are we continuing something because it still matters to us, or because we’ve become attached to the person we were when we started it?
Trusting Your Informed Intuition
Throughout the conversation, Tony and Achim return to the importance of intuition.
Not impulsive decisions or wishful thinking, but what Tony calls informed intuition.
It’s the inner knowing that develops through experience, reflection, experimentation, and self-awareness.
Achim believes that as we grow, we can become better at recognizing when something is right for us and when it’s time to move on.
But recognizing that moment is only part of the challenge.
We also have to be willing to act.
It’s easy to become trapped in endless analysis, waiting for certainty that may never arrive.
Achim’s approach is to recognize when a decision has become clear, trust the experience that informed it, and take the next step.
The Work Behind the Transformation
Achim’s move to Portugal offers another lesson.
People often describe his international moves as extraordinarily courageous or difficult.
But he recognizes that those reactions frequently reflect other people’s assumptions and limitations rather than his own experience.
What feels impossible to one person may feel entirely natural to another.
He also reminds us that the rewards of change often require consistent effort.
After moving to Portugal, Achim committed to learning Portuguese through regular lessons and practice.
The satisfaction of being mistaken for a native speaker during an everyday interaction was the result of that sustained commitment.
We often admire the visible achievements in someone else’s life without appreciating the work that made them possible.
Transformation isn’t simply about making a bold decision.
It’s also about showing up for what comes afterward.
Allowing Life to Surprise You
Perhaps one of the most thought-provoking parts of Achim’s journey is how his approach to life continues to evolve.
After decades of setting goals, making decisions, and building successful ventures, he has entered a period in Portugal where he’s less focused on making things happen.
Instead, he’s paying attention to what is emerging around him.
New relationships.
Unexpected opportunities.
Different experiences.
A growing appreciation for simply being present.
He’s discovering that when we stop trying to control every outcome, we sometimes become more aware of possibilities we might otherwise overlook.
That doesn’t mean surrendering our ability to choose.
It means allowing life to present opportunities before deciding which ones deserve our attention.
Amplifying Your Personal Impact
Achim’s journey offers a different way to think about success and personal impact.
It’s not simply about accumulating accomplishments, building businesses, or earning recognition.
It’s about becoming increasingly aware of who we are, what matters to us, and how we want to contribute.
Sometimes that requires the courage to begin.
Sometimes it requires discipline to keep going.
And sometimes it requires the wisdom to let go.
Ultimately, amplifying our personal impact may have less to do with becoming more impressive and more to do with becoming more fully ourselves.
